Introduction

The Free German Trade Union (Freier Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund or FDGB) was the umbrella organization for 16 communist trade unions. Almost every industrial worker in the country was a member. (...) The flag was flown at trade union meetings, parades and in front of trade union buildings.

The flag was red with FDGB symbol in center. The symbol showed the handshake, referring to the SED symbol, above it the letters FDGB gold on red.
